COACH JOHN SANDERS (1947-1988), was an outstanding athlete at Lakewood High School, where he played football, baseball and basketball.  He attended Miami University on an athletic scholarship and played football and basketball.  He later earned a master’s degree in physical education from Case Western Reserve University.  He began teaching biology and physical education at Olmsted Falls High School in 1952, and became assistant principal in 1960.   He was the head track coach at Olmsted Falls High School for 33 years.  He was known across the state of Ohio as a coach, an official, and a promoter of track and field.  He was also an early advocate of women’s participation in sports.  Olmsted Falls had the first co-ed track team in the area.  He was elected to the Lakewood High School Hall of Fame in 1989, and was named to the Ohio Cross Country and Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992, at which time he was the oldest active track coach in the state.
